Many moms, stay-at-home and working, are looking for a way to make extra income online, or a way to connect and share their advice. Blogging is a great way to conquer both of these goals. It’s intimidating to get started, though, and I’m here to give you tips to make the transition into blogging easier.
At the beginning of 2017, my New Year’s resolution was to begin a successful blog. I had no idea how to, but I had been doing my research and gathering tips. When I signed up for my blog, I had no idea how to set it up! There was so much unknown that I didn’t know how to do.
As of February 17, 2017, I had been blogging for 1 month. In that 1 month, I learned so much and feel much more comfortable on my blog! There’s still quite a bit I’m learning, but I feel I have a basic grasp on things! I’m here to tell you the tips I’ve learned and great sources I’ve used along the way to help guide you along your journey of blogging!
Make sure to sign up to receive a FREE copy of my Facebook group schedule to help you organize your groups! There are 15 groups listed to help get you started with sharing your blog posts!
Before beginning my blog, I really didn’t have an idea of what it entailed. I thought I only needed to post my thoughts, add an image to Pinterest, and it would take off and be seen!
Oh boy, was I wrong about what I thought blogging would be!
Tips for building a successful blog…what I learned and great resources to help you with your journey!
1. Invest in yourself! You don’t have to spend a lot, but some education helps with the fears, anxiety, and frustration.
One word of advice I’ve read over and over online is to invest in a site that you own, rather than a site that’s free on wordpress.com!
Bluehost is a fantastic host for blogs. When you sign up with Bluehost, you get a FREE domain, FREE 24/7 customer service, FREE Site Builders, and 1-click WordPress Install.
They make it so easy to set up your website! The customer service is great and very helpful! I accidentally messed something up on my site and was receiving error messages every time I tried to upload an image. I went to Bluehost’s website, did a quick chat, and they fixed it for me immediately!
Click here to begin your blogging journey for less than $4/month! You can also read about all they have to offer on their website!
If you’ve already entered the blogging world, you know that Elite Blogging Academy (EBA) is THE class to take, but it comes with a hefty price and it’s only open once a year. Unfortunately for this year, that window has already passed. The following classes are great substitutes that will give you a great foundation to build your blog up!
Blog By Numbers Course
After you’ve signed up for a site, you might get overwhelmed by all the buttons, tabs, widgets, page, post, the menu…the list goes on. The course Blog by Numbers by Suzi Whitford was amazing for me and it will be for you too!
You know the color by number coloring books that our children have or we had as children? Yeah, that’s how this course is set up for newcomers! It gives you step-by-step directions to set up your blog to look professional and not bring you to tears in the process.
Before taking Suzi’s course, my theme was very blah! I couldn’t find a theme I liked and the site looked very amateurish. Her course took me step by step through the process of setting up my site and building it up!
If you haven’t signed up for a site yet, her course will teach you how to pick a niche and a name for your site! She offers so much information in her easy to follow course! Her course features short videos you watch at your own pace. She covers everything from finding your niche to creating Pinterest images, to writing your first post! All the basics of blogging are covered!
For only $47 for the video course, it is well worth your time and will alleviate your frustration and anxiety with your site!
Click here to find out more about her course and what it has to offer you! You will not be disappointed!
2. If you want to monetize your blog, think about how you will get there
I’m using affiliate marketing and ads to monetize my blog. Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing is another great course to take if you want to monetize your blog with affiliate marketing! She has gone from $0 to over $50,000/month in affiliate sales!! It’s amazing! The best way to learn is from the best! Take the course, and you’ll be learning from the best!
The course is self-paced and easy to follow. She breaks down how to become an affiliate partner and lists suggestions for different niches. There are ways to make money in any niche! Pinterest, traffic, and how to get the sale are also covered!
The best thing about the course, though, is that you get to join her exclusive Facebook group where you can ask questions to Michelle herself! It’s been very helpful in the few weeks I’ve been apart of the group!
At only $197 for the course, it’s really a steal of a deal! ($197 is a lot of money, but relatively speaking, compared to other courses I’ve seen, it’s cheap!) You get a lot for the amount of money you are paying for it, and remember my tip back in #1…invest in yourself!
Don’t just take my word for it! Read about the course here to see how it can help you!
Shareasale is a great site to begin affiliate marketing with. Sign up and search for the companies they have available! (Companies like Tailwind, Gymboree, Zulily, Fanatics and many, many other companies)
3. It’s a lot of self-promotion in a passive way!
Readers aren’t going to stumble upon your site without you sharing your site somewhere. You will need to promote yourself, share your blog posts, and pin like crazy to get traffic coming to your site! You will want to join Facebook groups and Pinterest groups to share your posts in and reach more readers!
Sign up here for my list of Facebook groups to join to start spreading the word of your blog!
4. Pin and share in groups
Find Pinterest groups through pingroupie.com, search for them on Pinterest, or you can look at the groups the leaders in your niche are in…maybe some of them are open to new contributors! You can also find Pinterest groups to join through Facebook groups that you are a part of! Ask around in the Facebook groups, and people are bound to help you out!
5. Organize yourself!!
Make a schedule. Make a daily to-do list. Keep a notebook with you to write down any ideas you may have for blog posts! I use a binder with a monthly schedule for what I’m going to do on my blog and by when. I write down goals I have for my blog and ideas I have, and I make daily to-do lists, so my mind isn’t racing at the end of the night for what still needs to get done!
6. Read articles on how to grow your blog!
There are plenty out there! Ask questions in Facebook groups! Everybody is more than willing to help! Blogging isn’t a competition! That’s one mindset I had to change. I had the mindset that since there are so many out there, mine would get lost and no one would care. The more I thought about it, the more I realized, when I search for things, I read more than one article. Bloggers don’t compete with each other, we enhance each other!
7. It’s a learning experience!
You will make mistakes, but luckily, you can change things and fix your mistakes! I have changed my Pinterest images 3 times in the month I’ve been blogging! I’ve changed my Pinterest board covers twice. The logo I use had changed twice. My theme has changed. And I’ve changed the way I word things in articles. Once I made my changes, I saw a difference in my traffic! Blogging is full of tests to see what works and what doesn’t! Don’t get discouraged if the first shot doesn’t work, just switch it up until you love it! If you love it, others will too!
8. Take advantage of freebies!
There are so many free blogging courses and worksheets available for users. Check out my recommendation page to see some of the best freebies I’ve come across that has helped me build up my blog! Make sure you sign up at the top of this post or at the bottom to receive a FREE Facebook group organization tool! It’ll give you over 20 different Facebook groups to join and the posting schedule of each group!
9. Focus on helping others
When you help promote someone else, they’ll likely reciprocate! Participate in Facebook groups and help where you can. Share the resources you’ve learned! Pin others’ pins! That’s how you’ll build your own site!
10. Set goals for yourself
How many facebook groups do you want to join by such and such date? Pinterest groups? How many views are you aiming for this month? Set the goals and write them down in your notebook!
11. Your first affiliate sale will come.
When I became an affiliate of Amazon, they require you to have a sale within a certain period of time. I was so worried I wouldn’t get the sale, but I did, and you will too!
12. You can’t do everything at once without spreading yourself too thin!
There is so much to do to build your website! You won’t be able to do it all in one week! Heck, I haven’t even gotten there in 1 month! The best bloggers concentrate on one area, master it, then move on to the next! They never stop learning! There’s always a way to grow yourself and improve.
Always keep in mind that blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. Do some research to perfect your blog and writing. And never stop learning! It’s easy to make excuses that you don’t have the time, but thousands of Moms have found time to begin their blogging journey. You’ll find time for things that matter to you most! If blogging is something that matters to you and you’re committed, you’ll do great!
